The transformation of the Southern Oregon track and field and cross country programs continued this week as head coach Brent Ericksen announced the signing of 11 individuals to compete for the Raiders.

Ruben Martinez, Mikayla Garrard (Mazama High School), Cody Carter (The Dallas High School), Jared Nichols (Cascade Christian High School), Kim Zetterland (Amador Valley High School), Paul Schwarzer (Ashland High School), Sean Reilly (Sunset High School), Jen Johnston (West Albany High School), Summer Cano (Century High School), Alexandra Rudd (Mt. Si High School) and Samantha Pummer (Siuslaw High School) are all scheduled to wear the red and black.

Junior David Laney earned a Top 10 finish and helped the Southern Oregon men to their best finish ever at today’s NAIA Cross Country National Championships in Vancouver, Wash.

Southern Oregon, ranked No. 1 coming into the National Championships, finished third with 188 points. Two-time defending National Champion and second-ranked Malone (Ohio) won the team race with 44 points and Concordia (Neb.) finished second with 166 points. Malone had four finish in the Top 12 and five in the Top 18.

The Southern Oregon men’s cross country team has a shot on Saturday to finish off an impressive jump to one of the elite cross country programs in the NAIA.

The top-ranked Raiders will look for the program’s first-ever National Championship Saturday when they travel to Vancouver, Wash.

The Southern Oregon men's cross country team is ranked No. 1 in the final NAIA Top 25 poll, the NAIA announced this afternoon.

The SOU men and second-ranked Malone (Ohio) both received 11 first place votes, while the Raiders edged Malone in overall points 612-611. Malone, the two-time defending National Champions, were ranked No. 1 for 29 straight weeks, before SOU took over the top spot in the poll for the past three weeks.

11.7.09 | Cross Country
The top-ranked Southern Oregon men's cross country team won the program's second straight Cascade Conference Championship today in Springfield.

The Raiders, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Top 25 for the past two weeks, cruised to the team title, outscoring College of Idaho 39-62. Eastern Oregon finished third with 86 points and Concordia finished fourth with 87 points.

On the women's side, the improving SOU women finished third in the team race. College of Idaho won the team title with 36 points, followed by Concordia (94), Southern Oregon (95) and Eastern Oregon (96).

Southern Oregon landed 18 student-athletes on the Cascade Conference's Fall All-Academic team.

To earn the honor, student-athletes must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 and be at least a sophomore.

The Southern Oregon men’s cross country team looks to make it back-to-back championships this Saturday when they take part in the Cascade Conference Championships in Springfield.

The championships will be held at Dorris Ranch and will start at 11 a.m.

The Southern Oregon men’s cross country team has taken over the No. 1 ranking in this week’s NAIA Top 25 Poll.

The Raiders replaced two-time defending National Champion Malone (Ohio) for the top spot.

“I’m kinda shocked and surprised,” SOU second-year head coach Brent Ericksen said. “But it’s a great honor, you always want to be considered the best in your sport. Now we need to go out and earn the honor and the only way to do that is at Nationals.”

For the third time this year, Southern Oregon's David Laney has been named the Cascade Conference Runner of the Week.

Laney also won the award on Sept. 21 and Oct. 5.

Both the Southern Oregon men’s and women’s cross country teams looked impressive at today’s Oregon State Beaver Classic in Corvallis.

The second-ranked SOU men scored the team victory by knocking off a field of 19 teams and defeating second place Seattle University 28-57. The SOU women had their top performance of the season, finishing second to NCAA Division Portland 53-81. Cascade Conference foe Northwest Christian, who received votes in the latest NAIA Poll, finished sixth with 142 points.
