The 13th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team opens up Cascade Conference play this weekend with a pair of road matches in Portland.

The Raiders travel to Warner Pacific Friday night and Concordia Saturday night. Both matches start at 7 p.m. and live video will be available on www.souraiders.com.

The Southern Oregon volleyball team swept Simpson 25-12, 25-13, 25-17 this afternoon and then fell to top-ranked and three-time NAIA defending National Champion Fresno Pacific 25-19. 25-22, 25-16 in the tonight's finale of the Paul Elliott Invitational at McNeal Pavilion.

Southern Oregon went 2-2 in the Invitational and now sports a 3-2 overall record.

The 13th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball split a pair of matches during the first day of the Paul Elliott Invitational at McNeal Pavilion.

The Raiders opened the day with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-12 sweep of Montana Western and then closed out the day falling to Embry Riddle (Fla.) 25-18, 25-17, 28-30, 25-12.

The Southern Oregon volleyball team earned a No. 13 ranking in the opening NAIA Top 25 Volleyball Poll.

The Raiders received 326 poll points and also finished last year ranked No. 13. Cascade Conference foe College of Idaho is ranked 16th with 282 poll points. Defending National Champion Fresno Pacific was the unanimous No. 1 pick after going 38-0 last year to win their third straight National Championship.

The Southern Oregon volleyball team opened up the 2010 season with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-19 non-conference victory over Holy Names tonight at McNeal Pavilion.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Holgen led the Raiders with nine kills. Senior All-American Leah Bergstrom had seven kills and no errors and All-American setter Lindsey Stone turned in 31 assists and two kills in her first action in over a year.

With nine returning players with playing experience, the Southern Oregon volleyball team opens the 2010 season Monday night at home against Holy Names.

The Raiders and Hawks play at 6:30 p.m.

Southern Oregon is coming off a 24-4 season in 2009, including a regular season Cascade Conference title and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament. SOU has now recorded three-straight 20-win seasons.

Former Ashland High star and UNLV four-year starter Jessica Walters has joined the Southern Oregon volleyball program as an assistant coach.

SOU head coach Josh Rohlfing announced the hiring of his former high school player this afternoon.

"I'm excited to hire someone that I respect and had the pleasure of coaching," Rohlfing said. "She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our program after playing Division I volleyball at UNLV."

Coming off a Cascade Conference Championship and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament, the Southern Oregon volleyball team has been picked as the preseason favorites in the annual Cascade Conference Preseason Volleyball Poll.

The Raiders received six first place votes and 95 total points to edge College of Idaho. The Coyotes received four first place votes and finished one points behind the Raiders with 94 points. It’s no surprise that the two teams finished so close in the preseason poll. The two teams shared the conference championship last year and the have combined for the last seven regular season titles.

The Southern Oregon volleyball program will open up practice Thursday night at Ashland Middle School.

The Raiders will practice at 6 p.m. SOU will practice at AMS because of camps in McNeal Pavilion.

SOU, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Josh Rohlfing, returns five starters from the 2009 squad that went 24-4 overall and 17-1 in Cascade Conference play to share a piece of the conference crown.

Southern Oregon head volleyball coach Josh Rohlfing today announced the signing of four individuals to National Letters of Intent to play for the Raiders during the 2010 season.

The group features junior college transfer Lauren Swetland (Cottonwood, Calif.) and high school products Claire Pynes (Etna, Calif.), Shannon Taylor (San Marcos, Calif.) and Sammie Waite (Crescent Valley, Ore.).
