Three former Southern Oregon football players have been named to the NAIA All-Decade Team as announced by College Fanz Sports Network.
Running back Dusty McGrorty was selected to the First Team, while defensive back Nick Daniken and punter Steve Baker earned Second Team honors.
“It's a daunting task to try to narrow down the best players over the last 10 years into a single list,” College Fanz Sports Network's Jason Dannelly said. “There have been so many great players though the years that some of the best in the NAIA didn't even make the list. I think that is a testament to the great players the NAIA has produced in the last ten seasons.”
McGrorty, who finished his SOU football career in 2003, left his mark as the best running back in SOU history and one of the best in the history of the NAIA.
A three-time All-American, McGrorty shattered 10 school and eight regional records and finished with 5,414 career yards (Fourth All-Time in NAIA history), 79 touchdowns (Second All-Time in NAIA history) and 474 points (Second All-Time in NAIA history). McGrorty also set an NAIA record with 75 touchdowns.
McGrorty signed a free agent contract and played with the St. Louis Rams following graduation.
Baker earned a pair of All-American honors in 2002 and 2003 as a punter. In 2003, Baker led the NAIA in punting at 43.8 yards per punt and finished among the Nation's leaders in 2002 at 42.8 per punt. Baker also two of the three longest punts in school history with a 73-yard effort and a 72-yard effort.
Baker was in the Oakland Raiders' training camp following graduation.
Daniken earned All-American honors in 2001 and 2002 for the Raiders. As a senior, Daniken finished second on the team in tackles with 69 and capped his career as the Northwest small-college record holder for kickoff returns for touchdowns (5) and average yardage per touch (29.1).
Daniken also was a top-notch punt returner, setting school records for career punt return yards (843) and punt return yards in a season (580).
