Waroff, Olstedt Leads Raiders During Day One

Decathlete Alex Waroff (Rogue River, Ore./Rogue River) and hurdler Dennis Olstedt (Seaside, Ore./Seaside) led a large group of Southern Oregon athletes during the opening day of the NAIA Track and Field National Championships in Marion, Ind.

Waroff sits in 11th place after the first day of the decathlon. Waroff has 3,246 points. British Columbia's Reid Gustavson leads the event with 3,942 points.

Waroff started off his day with a 10th place finish in the 100 and just missed a career best time with a finish of 11.55. Waroff then had a decathlon personal best jump of 21-00.75 in the long jump to finish sixth. Waroff then finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 36-05.75 and finished the day with a 14th place finish in the high jump with a leap of 5-09.75.

Olstedt qualified for Friday's semifinals in the 400 hurdles by finishing 15th overall in the prelims with a time of 54.44. The time was the fourth fastest time in his heat.

Senior Levi Roudebush (Grants Pass, Ore./North Valley) just missed out on qualifying in the prelims of the 1,500. Roudebush finished sixth in his heat with a time of 3:57.70.

In the men's 3,000 steeplechase, junior James Johnstone (Lake Arrowhead, Calif./Rim of the World) just missed out on qualifying for the finals in the event with a 16th place finish in a time of 9:28.87. In the women's 3,000 steeplechase, junior Tara Krempley (Sherwood, Ore./Sherwood) failed to qualify, but still finished ninth in her heat with a time of 11:43.51.

In the final of the women's 10,000, Anya Martinez (Central Point, Ore./Crater) was the top finisher out of the three Raiders in the event. Martinez finished 19th with a time of 39:08.85. Kristen Juveland (Central Point, Ore./Crater) finished 27th in 39:41.32 and Laurie Stoutenburgh finished 29th in 40:02.92.

On the men's side, Zach Elliott (Central Point, Ore./Crater) finished 23rd in 32:59.29. Josh Seitz (Forest Grove, Ore./Forest Grove) finished 29th in 33:50.92 and Andrew Milne (Redding, Calif./Redding Adventist Academy) finished 31st in 34:06.90.

The Championships continue on Friday with Waroff finishing the decathlon, Olstedt competing in the 400 hurdle semifinals and Kelly Clark (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) in the racewalk finals. On Saturday, Seth Lindquist (Boring, Ore./Damascus Christian) will compete in the triple jump, Ryan Matz (Chico, Calif./Pleasant Valley) will run in the marathon and Holly Haga (Central Point, Ore. /Crater) will throw in the discus.
