The opening day of the NAIA Track and Field National Championships resulted in a pair of All-Americans and a pair of school records for the Southern Oregon track and field squad today.

Junior Max Perry (Florence, Ore./Siuslaw) and sophomore Seena Frantz (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) got the Raiders started off on the right foot by both claiming All-American honors and setting school records in the process.

Perry earned the school's first All-American honor of the day in the hammer.

The junior threw a personal best 190-07 to finish fourth in the event. The throw also easily broke the previous school record of 184-08, set by Shawn Davis in 1998. Lindenwood's Bruno Boccalotta won the hammer with a throw of 199-08. Perry's All-American honor is the first for a thrower from SOU since 2006 and the first in the hammer since 2002.

Frantz earned her first All-American honor and also set a school record. Frantz finished the 10,000 in 36:35.65 to finish sixth in the event. The time bests SOU Hall of Famer Theresa Walton's previous record time of 37:00.97, set in 1994. Frantz is the first female All-American for the Raiders since 2008 and the first track event All-American since 2003.

Senior Alex Waroff (Rogue River, Ore./Rogue River) had a big day in the first day of the decathlon. Waroff, an All-American in the event last year, won the 400 with a time of 50.29. Waroff also finished fourth in the both the 100 (11.60) and long jump (21-07.25), 12th in the shot put (35-10) and 14th in the high jump (5-06). Overall, Waroff sits in ninth place with 3,318 points. Eastern Oregon's Robbie Haynie leads with 3,637 points.

In today's hurdle prelims, all three SOU athletes advanced to tomorrow's semifinals. In the 110 hurdles, freshman Sullivan Stevens (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs) finished 11th in the prelims with a time of 14.79. In the men's 400 hurdles, senior Dennis Olstedt (Seaside, Ore./Seaside) finished 15th in the prelims with a time of 53.99.

In the men's 3,000 steeplechase, James Johnstone (Lake Arrowhead, Calif./Rim of the World) was the only one of four Raiders in the event to advance to Saturday's finals. Johnstone finished fourth in the prelims with a time of 9:15.26. Dennis McCaffrey (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) finished 16th (9:33.31), Josh Seitz (Forest Grove, Ore./Forest Grove) finished 18th (9:39.28) and Colin McRoberts (Lake Forest, Ore./El Toro) finished 25th (9:51.71).

In the women's 3,000 steeplechase, senior Tara Krempley (Sherwood, Ore./Sherwood) missed out on her chance to advance to the finals. Krempley finished 19th with a time of 11:29.21.

In the finals if the men's 10,000, junior Ryan Ghelfi (Redding, Calif./Redding Adventist) finished 20th in 31:21.07 and junior Ryan Sorenson (Sheridan, Wyo./Sheridan) finished 35th in 31:51.17.

Today's 4x100 prelim was canceled because of not enough teams to run a prelim, so the SOU men will run in the semifinals Friday afternoon.
