MEET RESULTS
GRESHAM – Southern Oregon reserved its best performances of the season for the Cascade Collegiate Conference championships, as the Raiders finished the 2013 championship meet with three meet records, 12 event titles, 30 all-conference performances and the first men's team title since 2005.
After posting five event titles on Friday's first day of competition, the Raiders added seven more on Saturday. Southern Oregon also added one more meet record, seven personal-best event marks and one final NAIA automatic qualifier going into the national championship meet in two weeks.
With 217 points, Southern Oregon ended the seven-year reign of Concordia in the men's standings. Eastern Oregon finished second with 145 points, while the Cavaliers tallied 131 to rank third. After setting one meet record and claiming two individual event titles to earn Men's Track Athlete of the Meet last season,
Jonz Olander (Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass) took it to another level with three event titles and another meet record to retain the honor for the second consecutive year. Head coach
Grier Gatlin was named men's track and field CCC Coach of the Year.
“We were very excited to win our first title in eight years on the men's side, and the women were right in the mix as well,” Gatlin said. “That made for a very exciting and competitive meet.”
Olander followed up his meet-record performance in the 400 on Friday with a pair of personal-record times in the 100 and 200 to win both events. Olander finished the 100 in 10.92 to narrowly edge teammate
Sullivan Stevens (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs), whose time of 10.95 was a personal record in its own right. A time of 21.73 gave Olander a sub-22-second mark in the 200 for the first time in his career. Olander also ran the anchor leg of Friday's conference champion 4x100 relay team.
Stevens also had a strong case for Men's Track Athlete of the Meet honors. The junior ran the first leg of the 4x100 relay and won the 110-meter hurdles race on Friday and followed that up with a pair of close second-place finishes on Saturday. Along with the personal record in the 100, Stevens shaved nearly a second off his previous best time in the 400-meter hurdles to finish the race in 53.78 and claim an automatic NAIA qualifier in the event for the first time this season. His time was only two-tenths of a second behind event champion Jordan Reeher, who came into the meet as more than a full-second favorite.
Eric Avila (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista) followed up Friday's school- and meet-record-setting performance in the 1500 with a second-place finish in the 5000 on Saturday.
Amelia Maguin (Fernley, Nev./Fernley) concluded a busy championship meet on Saturday, earning all-conference honors in a total of six events with a meet record and event championship in the 400-meter hurdles. Maguin posted a personal-best time of 1:01.35 in the event to break the previous meet record of 1:01.69 set by Eastern Oregon's Kimmy Moore last year. Maguin's event time was two-hundredths of a second behind Jill Carrier's SOU record from 1995. She also finished second in the 100 with a personal-record time of 12.57 and ran the anchor leg of the third-place 4x400 relay team that posted a season-best time.
Mikayla Garrard (Klamath Falls, Ore./Mazama) kept herself busy as well for the SOU women, earning all-conference honors in four events during the two-day championship meet. Garrard posted a personal-best time of 25.38 to win the 200 and ran the first leg of the third-place 4x400 relay team. She finished third in the 400 and ran anchor on the conference runner-up 4x100 relay team on Friday.
“Jonz, Sullivan and Eric were all highlights for the men this weekend, as were Amelia and Mikayla on the women's side,” Gatlin said.
Zach Boyd-Helm (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) claimed the event title in the men's 800, with teammate
Kevin Jorgensen (Yreka, Calif./Yreka) also claiming all-conference honors in the event with a third-place showing.
Sam Hartinger (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) won the men's triple jump with a mark of 47-1 1/2, and
Stephanie Techler (Berlin, Germany/) claimed the event title in the women's pole vault at 11-5 3/4.
Danny Parks (Eugene, Ore./) finished with a pair of third-place marks in the shot put and javelin, while
Alexandra Rudd (North Bend, Wash./Mount Si) added a third-place time in the women's 5000 to earn all-conference recognition.
“It was an all-around team effort,” Gatlin said. “The sprints, jumps, throws and distances all had great performances.”
Now Southern Oregon prepares for the final meet of the 2013 season, as the Raiders will head to Indiana in two weeks for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.
