Four Raiders still alive after Day 1 of WCWA Championships

2/12/2016 5:27:00 PM

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – With the first of two days completed, Southern Oregon University can already consider its first ever trip to the Women's College Wrestling Association Championships a success.

Of the six Raiders competing at Abe Lemons Arena in the largest field in WCWA history – over 300 wrestlers representing 25 schools – four are on the cusp of becoming All-Americans. Jessica DeHart (109 pounds), Madelynn McIlwain (116), Kal Holliday (130) and Alejandra Rodriguez (130) each ended Friday's action one win away from clinching no worse than eighth place in their respective brackets, and can all still place as high as third.

All four Raiders will pick up with elimination bouts when wrestling resumes at 8 a.m. Saturday.

As a team, SOU is 13th of 25 in the standings with 36.5 points, as Chloe Spencer (136) also contributed one win. Two-time defending champion King (Tenn.) is in first place, followed by five-time champion Oklahoma City, the tournament host.

DeHart – who came in at No. 9 as the only Raider ranked top-10 in her class – started the day with a pin of Midland's Kyla Aruda in 1 minute 53 seconds. She was sent to the consolation bracket in a 2-1 setback against Cumberlands' Arelys Valles, but responded with two decisive victories in the consolation bracket: a 12-1 technical fall against Wayland Baptist's Rhonda Johnson, and a first-round pin (1:02) of Missouri Baptist's Samantha Diaz. She'll have to go through seventh-ranked Taylor Resuriz of McKendree to become an All-American.

At 116, McIlwain was the only Raider to reach the quarterfinals. Following a first-round bye, she got Southwestern Oregon's Kaylnn Hixenbaugh by 10-0 technical fall and upset 10th-ranked Ricki Liang of King with an 8-7 decision. In the quarters, McIlwain was shut out by top-ranked Rachel Archer of Oklahoma City, 10-0.

The 130-pound bracket proved to be lucrative for the Raiders, thanks especially to Rodriguez's four pins and one technical fall. She pinned Lindenwood's Jasmine Hernandez in 49 seconds to get out of the first round before getting redirected to the consolation bracket by Campbellsville's Shelby Hall in a 13-2 technical fall. Rodriguez then finished the day with four straight wins: a pin of Adrian's Vanessa Sanchez in 57 seconds, a pin of Adrian's Deandra Benn in 2:04, a 10-0 technicall fall against Jametown's Jenna Elminger, and finally a win by fall in 3:54 against ninth-ranked Rachael Coleck of Waldorf. She'll be an underdog again in her next matchup against 10th-ranked Axa Molina of Lindenwood.

Holliday's road was not as trying by nearly as dominant. After a first-round bye, she dominated Wayland Baptist's Rizpah Umi with a 10-0 technical fall. After getting pinned by the aforementioned Molina, she ran off two more technical falls: 10-0 over Jamestown's Rebekah Johnson and 16-6 over Cumberlands' Kristin Yamasaki.

Spencer's lone win was another upset for the Raiders, 12-2 over ninth-ranked Heiley Garcia of Oklahoma City. She and Sydney Norvell were both later knocked out in the consolation rounds.
