Following a four-month study of the Southern Oregon University’s athletic program, a task force appointed by SOU President Mary Cullinan has issued its report. The group interviewed representatives from Western Oregon University, Oregon Institute of Technology, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and other organizations. Kim Fritts has announced her resignation as head softball coach at Southern Oregon University, effective March 14. Assistant coach Kolby Schooley has been named interim head coach by SOU Athletic Director Matt Sayre and will finish out the season. The second annual Raider Red Zone golf outing is set for May 1 at Centennial Golf Club. The tournament is a major fundraiser for the SOU football team and is put on by the Raider Red Zone, the alumni group of SOU football. Southern Oregon sophomore Mitchell Lofstedt has been named the NWCA/NAIA National Wrestler of the Year. The award was handed out following Saturday's completion of the NAIA National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla. Southern Oregon's Mitchell Lofstedt and Barry Johnson each claimed National Championships at today's NAIA National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla. As a team, the Raiders finished second for the second consecutive year. Top-ranked Notre Dame (Ohio) ran away with the team title and Great Falls finished third. "I'm proud of the way we wrestled," SOU head coach Mike Ritchey said. "It would have taken a great effort to beat Notre Dame this weekend. Freshman Holly Haga made the most of her first collegiate track meet by winning both the shot put and discus at today’s 22nd annual Artie Sullivan Invitational at Raider Stadium. In all, the Raiders won 12 events in the meet that featured teams from SOU, Oregon Tech, College of the Siskiyous and Southwestern Oregon Community College. Haga, a freshman from Central Point, cruised to victories in both events. In the discus, Haga won with a throw of 130-08. Three members of the Southern Oregon wrestling team are set to wrestle for titles tomorrow night at the NAIA National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla. Mitchell Lofstedt will wrestle for the National Championship at 125 pounds, while Barry Johnson and Kyle Wirkuty will face off against each other for the title at 141. The Southern Oregon track and field team will open the 2010 season Saturday with the 22nd annual Artie Sullivan Invitational at Raider Stadium. The meet, named after a former SOU track and field student-athlete who passed away in the late 1980s, will feature men’s and women’s teams from SOU, Oregon Tech, College of the Siskiyous and Southwestern Oregon Community College. With a goal of a top three finish, the sixth-ranked Southern Oregon wrestling team has some work ahead of it as they get ready for this week’s NAIA National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.
