GRESHAM – A handful of Southern Oregon University athletes took advantage of their last chance to qualify for the Cascade Conference Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Mt. Hood Track Festival.
SOU took home wins in nine different events, but Kayle Blackmore, running the 1,500 meters, was the only Raider to hit a national qualifying mark. A time of 4 minutes, 42.00 seconds gave her third place and an NAIA 'B' standard, and was over five seconds better than her previous best.
Aspen Abbott took over the No. 2 spot on the CCC's 800 list with a winning time of 2:16.96, less than a second off a provisional-qualifying standard. Cora Gallop and Natalie Berania also qualified for the conference meet in the run: Gallop's 2:19.39 was good for second place and No. 7 on the CCC list, and Berania placed fourth in 2:21.47.
Gallop, a freshman, claimed a win in the triple jump, upping her CCC-best mark to 36 feet, 6 3/4 inches. Hannah Lambert joined her with a successful day in the field, winning the shot put (38-2 1/4) and placing second in the discus (122-5) and hammer (128-4) throws.
In the sprints, Loghan Sprauer was second in the 200-meter dash (26.10) and third in the 100 (12.60), making her fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 100 on the conference lists. Tierra Barrett took third in the 200 with a personal-best time of 12.65.
For the men, Hayden Saparto won the 100 (10.98) and the 200 (22.98) and his 100 time vaulted him to No. 8 in the CCC.
Four different Raiders clocked last-chance conference qualifying times in the 1,500: third-place Ryan Alexander (3:58.73), sixth-place Kevin Poteracke (3:59.75), eighth-place Matt Williams (4:00.07) and 11th-place Noah Oberitter (4:02.23). Williams also placed third in the 800 (1:58.80) to pace SOU, Christian VanSise was third in the 400 (51.20) and Ben Stevens took the 5K field (16:08.60).
The Raiders will be off until the CCC Championships on May 13-14 in Hermiston.
